What is Infrared Heat?

Quite simply infrared is the radiation that is produced by all warm objects from the sun or a tiled stove to our bodies. The German born English astronomer and composer, Sir William Herschel discovered in 1800 that the heat given off by the suns radiation increases just beyond the red end of the visible spectrum (the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to and can be detected by the human eye). Although we cannot see infra-red radiation, we can feel it and there is no doubt about its effects.

How does it Work?

Radiation emitted by an infra-red source is absorbed into the skin and the underlying tissue layers. The body’s circulatory system then transmits this heat through the entire body. Infra-red is a safe form of long-wave radiation and an excellent way to relax and increase your general sense of well-being without side effects. Infrared heat therapy loosens muscles and relaxes the body prior to a massage. Many massage therapists use infrared heat to provide much more thorough and effective treatment. Temperatures can reach up to 60 C.

Health Benefits

Removes Toxins and Mineral Waste

Increased blood circulation stimulates the sweat glands, releasing built-up toxins and waste. Daily sweating can help detoxify your body as it rids itself of an accumulation of potentially carcinogenic heavy metals (lead, mercury, zinc, nickel, cadmium) as well as alcohol, nicotine, sodium, sulphuric acid and cholesterol.

Burns Calories and Controls Weight

As you relax in the gentle heat of the Sahara Valley sauna, your body is actually hard at work, producing sweat, pumping blood – and burning calories. According to a Journal of the American Medical Association report, in a single sauna session you may burn as many calories as you would rowing or jogging for 30 minutes. So you lose weight – not just water

Provides the Same Effects of Exercise

The heart receives a workout similar to a 20-30 minute FIR sauna session and the body perspires the same amount as a 6 mile run. Infrared saunas are perfect for those who do not have time for regular exercise or suffer from injuries that inhibit for rigorous activity. Perspiring is part of the complex thermoregulatory process of the body that increases the heart rate, cardiac output, and metabolic rate. The process requires a large amount of the energy and reduces excess moisture, salt and subcutaneous fat. Fat becomes soluble water at 42, when body sweats out fats and toxins.

Clears Cellulite

Sahara Valley saunas help clear ugly cellulite, the gel-like lumps of fat, water and debris trapped in pockets beneath the skin. European beauty specialists routinely incorporate daily saunas in programs to reduce cellulite. And because the radiant heat of the Sahara Valley sauna warms three times as deeply as conventional saunas, it is significantly more effective at reducing cellulite.

Relieves Pain

The deep heat of your Sahara Valley sauna helps peripheral blood vessels dilate, bringing relief and healing to muscle and soft tissue injuries. Increased blood circulation carries off metabolic waste products and delivers oxygen-rich blood to oxygen-depleted muscles, so they recover faster. Muscles relax most readily when tissues are warm, for greater flexibility and range of motion.

Eases joint Pain and Stiffness

In Europe, radiant heat therapy is widely used to treat patients suffering from many forms of arthritis. In addition, it has been proven effective in the treatment of sprains, neuralgia, bursitis, muscle spasms, joint stiffness and many other muscular-skeletal ailments. Much of the stiffness, aches and soreness that comes with aging is reduced or eliminated.

Improves the Immune System

A sauna’s deep heat raises your body temperature, inducing an artificial fever. As it works to combat the “fever,” your body’s immune system is strengthened. Combined with the elimination of toxins and wastes produced by the intense sweating, your overall health and resistance to disease is increased. During a fever, the body heats up to eliminate viruses and attack foreign agents. Subsequently, the body wards off invading organisms much more easily because the immune system is activated consistently by the “artificial fever”. Recent studies also show that colds and flu-like illnesses are reduced dramatically if treated in the early stages with FIR heat therapy.

Increases Blood Circulation and Strengthens the Cardiovascular System

As your body increases sweat production to cool itself, your heart works harder pumping blood at a greater rate to boost circulation, supplying the conditioning benefits of continuous exercise. Heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate increase, while diastolic blood pressure drops, for improved overall cardiovascular fitness.

Improves Skin

The profuse sweating achieved after just a few minutes in the Sahara Valley sauna carries off deeply imbedded impurities and dead skin cells, leaving the skin glowing and immaculately clean. Increased circulation draws your skin’s own natural nutrients to the surface. You’ll see improved tone, elasticity, texture and fresh colour.

Expel Toxins – Detoxification

Toxins such as sodium, alcohol, nicotine, carcinogenic heavy metals (cadmium, lead, zinc, nickel) and mercury accumulate in the body during modern daily life. Infrared heat therapy stimulates the sweat glands to cleanse and detoxify skin. Infrared heat improves circulation, expels dirt chemicals and removes dead cells from surface of skin. All of these benefits lead to a softer and firm complexion. Reduces wrinkle associated with aging.

Reduces Stress and Fatigue

Perhaps the most immediate relief your Sahara Valley sauna offers is simple relaxation, as it melts away the stresses and tensions of urban life. Just a few minutes in the gentle warmth of the Sahara Valley sauna gives you an overall massaging effect, soothing jangled nerves and knotted muscles. You’ll feel rejuvenated and renewed, restored in both body and mind.

You can add a sauna session to any of our treatments, just ask to be added to your session at the time of your booking ( only over the phone).
